It's a boy, it's a girl. Lots of couples now are interested in having the ability of choosing the gender of their baby before starting in getting it. The new wave of gender selection have faced lots of criticism and also lots of support while some people regard the gender selection as acceptable only in people carrying a sex transmitted genetic disease. Others expressed their worry that gender selection just because the parents want it could result in discrimination, potential violence and gender imbalance.
For some people, gender selection is ethical in case of "family balancing". In some cultures certain sex is favored upon the other due to reasons like e.g. Male children may be more employable in the future and thus provide more financial support, having males are important for carrying the family name and its heritage and protecting the family wealth.
Increasing levels of divorces and second marriages are noted due to leaving the wife that produces a certain sex and looking for another chance with another wife... Some families even treat the wife in a less or better position according to her offspring.
Scientific theory
A women's ovum contains chromosome (X) while a man's sperm contains one of either chromosomes (X or Y) which will, depending upon which fertilizes the egg first, result in the birth of either a baby girl (XX) or baby boy (XY).
The girl producing sperms (X) are very strong but are slower moving. The boy producing sperms (Y) are weaker but much faster.
Therefore, depending on whether you want to conceive a boy or a girl, several theories where laid where you can manipulate different variables to increase the chances of achieving your desired baby sex.
Method 1 (Natural Home Trials)
Timing Conception: For a girl, you should conceive well before (about three days prior to) ovulation. This is because the girl sperm can survive for this long period of time while the boy sperm can not. For a boy, you'll want to conceive no earlier than the day of ovulation. It helps to know your ovulation day.
Changing Your Vaginal PH: A douche of water and vinegar or lemon juice (acid PH) immediately before intercourse favors a girl; a douche of water and baking soda (alkaline PH) favors a boy. It helps to know your PH by vaginal PH testing strips.
Sexual Positions: If you're trying to conceive a girl, you want to make the trip to the cervix longer (since the girl producing sperm can survive this while the boy's one can't), so you'd use shallow penetration. If you want a boy baby, you'd go with deep penetration to give the weak boy sperm a short, safe trip to the egg.
Sperm Count: For a boy, don't have sex for 3- 4 days before you reach the target date which is ovulation day! For girls, have sex everyday and make the last one 3 days before ovulation. In addition for a girl, the man is supposed to take a hot bath immediately before intercourse.
Diet: The diet should be followed for three months prior to conceiving. This diet is supposed to influence the barrier that surrounds the ovum in such a way that only one of the two types of sperms is allowed to enter, depending on the kind of diet that is being followed.
The girl diet has plenty of magnesium and calcium but lacks sufficient quantities of sodium and potassium. E.g.: Chocolate , Fresh vegetables and fruits, Fish , Sweets, dairy products, foodstuffs that are not too salty, salt-free bread and butter, ice cream, eggs, rice, pasta.
The boy-diet is rich in potassium and sodium, but lacks magnesium and calcium. E.g.: Meat, Salty snacks, like chips, Caffeine, carbonated drinks, fish, soups, white bread, pasta, potatoes, and rice
Orgasm: When trying to conceive a girl, then don't orgasm during sex as the body produces substances after orgasm that makes the vaginal environment more alkaline, which favors the "boy" sperm. In addition those contractions which accompany an orgasm help move the sperm up and into the cervix, giving the "boy" sperm an extra chance.
Method 2 (The Chinese calendar)
A chart that was found in an ancient tomb in China and is based on the Chinese lunar calendar. By using the mother's age at conception and the month of conception, supposedly you can determine with 100% accuracy if your baby is a boy or a girl.
Method 3 (Medical Ways)
There are two gender selection methods available. The sperm gender selection and embryonic gender selection (commonly known as pre-conception gender selection, or PGD).
Sperm Gender Selection: The process involves sorting through the seminal fluid and separating the X-chromosome-carrying sperm from the Y-chromosome-carrying sperm using a specialized laser to emit a DNA-specific probe that helps identify the X and Y cells in the seminal fluid. If the couple wants a female baby, the Y-carrying sperm cells are removed; if the couple wants a male baby, then the X-carrying sperm are removed. In this way, the percentage of desired gender-determining genetic material is increased in the seminal fluid. To complete the sperm gender selection process, the enriched seminal fluid is then used in conjunction with intrauterine insemination (IUI), in vitro fertilization, or Intracytoplasmic sperm injection.
Embryonic Gender Selection PGD The process involves in vitro fertilization of several eggs. Once the eggs are fertilized and form embryos, a single cell is removed from each for genetic testing. After the gender of each embryo is determined, and unhealthy embryos are identified, the embryo of the chosen sex are then transferred and implanted in the mother. The success rate is nearly 100 percent.
